You may ask this question while you have your mail list, research group sites, Yahoo discussion groups, Google group, even wikipedia.
When I started building this site several months ago, I believed this site is needed. And I still believe so.
Several important aspects on this site:
1) Centralized: My idealized goal. Not monopoly, just don't want to see all the infos scattered around.
2) Archived and categorized: Your posts will not be lost over the time and can be accessed in this database.
3) Free publishing. Not just no cost. Mostly, you are free to publish without much restriction (copyright is the only restriction I can think of).
4) Peer review through comments: We do not offer peer review for your posts (we may do that in the future if it is demanded by the users). But the quality and content will be judged by other users.
5) Free accessible: You posts are accessible by anyone, at anywhere and any time. For most of us, we don't want keep our research works in secret. We want more people appreciate, cite, use, and judge them. Science is free.
6) Specialized: We do not expect people to learn electron microscopy through an encyclopedia. Similarly, general info centers such as Wikipedia do not meet our special in-depth needs in our special fields.
7) Collaborated books: Can we create full-fledged, free books on different topics (TEM, SEM, STEM, EELS, surface analysis, X-ray, ...)? Yes, we can.
8) Community, community and community! This site is for people with common interests. We can set up different services for our member. Currently, we have resume posting, job listing. There are more can be added upon the requests. (Polls? File exchanges? Online software? ...)
