The emfocal.com site is interactive, dynamic, and collaborative online publication platform.
Interactive: user can create, modify, reorganize or delete different contents depends on user permissions.
Dynamic: All pages are generated dynamically from a database. All the text contents and the site structures are stored in the database. Page contents can vary depending on different link requests and inputs.
The website and the database are backed-up daily. There are always three copies for the past three days. A monthly backup is also updated once a month. This is for the case when all the three recent copies got damaged. The backup is copied to a different location once a week (I may do that daily when I find a suitable way to to it).
You may ask this question while you have your mail list, research group sites, Yahoo discussion groups, Google group, even wikipedia.
When I started building this site several months ago, I believed this site is needed. And I still believe so.
Several important aspects on this site:
1) Centralized: My idealized goal. Not monopoly, just don't want to see all the infos scattered around.
2) Archived and categorized: Your posts will not be lost over the time and can be accessed in this database.

The gallery needs to be populated to check its functions.
This is my original design (with different color schemes) of logo for this site.
The meaning of this image is a combination of electron orbits around a nucleus and a focal point. I dropped this as a logo because it looks heavy headed, and it somehow does not seem professional.
I sometime get this memory exhausted error message. Primarily due to php memory limitation. Need to see when this happens. Leave note here on the occurrences.
This is my first blog at this live site. I just copied my launching announcement here.
After laboring for several months on this site, the emfocal.com community site is now online.
This site is born silently, without any announcements (except this message). I want to check its behavior on a live host. If you happen to run into this site and you are interested in various techniques of electron microscopy, I encourage you to give this site a test.
The main function of this site is to supply a free platform for users in the large field of materials analysis (with a focus on electron microscopy). Information in the field has been scattered around through mail list, email communication, web posts, blogs, personal pages, institute web sites, etc. It will be ideal to centralize those valuable information so that the information can be achieved, shared, and accessible in a common interface. This the main idea to form this website.
Some general notes is linked here. They include: Terms of use, Privacy Policy, design philosophy, etc.
This is a privite book by site builder. The site strucutre and philosophy is discussed.
Comments are welcome.
